Training programs and initiatives offered by the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Corrections for juvenile corrections professionals in the areas of leadership and management, training and development, juvenile offender management, and sexual misconduct in correctional settings are described and outlined.
Abstract
Training programs for juvenile corrections professionals offered in the area of leadership and management include: correctional leadership development and executive training for chiefs and executive officers of juvenile agencies. Training programs offered in the area of helping agencies build capacity for training and development include: Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)/juvenile agency training coordinators and directors and becoming a cycle master. A training program offered in the area of juvenile offender management is entitled, “Meeting the Needs of Juvenile Female Offenders.” A training program offered in the area of sexual misconduct in correctional settings is entitled, “Addressing Staff Sexual Misconduct with Youth in Custody.” In the area of leadership and management, a regional training initiative is described which functions as a national network enabling the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Corrections (NIC) to support correctional training nationwide. Within the sexual misconduct in correctional settings area, the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), enacted in 2003 is described. Additional information is provided in the areas of information services, technical assistance, NIC satellite/Internet broadcasts, NIC Learning Center, the NIC/OJJDP training at the NIC Training Center, and NIC/OJJDP partnership programs. Through an interagency agreement with OJJDP, NIC is offering training, training-related services, and technical assistance for professionals in juvenile corrections, detention, and probation and parole.
