Several warning signs identified in possible gang affiliation include: family conflict (curfew violations), talking back, lack of communication, changes in behavior and attitude, dress style, increase in material possessions and cash, trouble in school, peers in a gang, and low commitment to school. Identified negatives factors which need to be eliminated in order to prevent gang affiliation include: family disorganization, lack of positive male role models, sibling antisocial behavior, negative labeling, and educational frustration. Several interventions identified in the fight against gang involvement include: (1) the development of networks that link existing organizations that deal with gang members and high risk youth; (2) provide access to academic, economic, and social opportunities; (3) promote organizational change; (4) develop the ability to communicate about and recognize gangs; and (5) encourage practical citizen involvement. In addition, positive family interaction is key to anti-gang involvement.
