This report presents the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI’s) processing guide for developing latent prints.
Abstract
The guide begins with a list of processes and procedures for different types of surfaces, including both porous and nonporous surfaces, and includes a consideration of the specific processing sequences that are necessary for developing prints left in blood. Next, the report presents the standard processes used for latent print development, including standards for the use of Amido Black, Fingerprint Powders, Silver Nitrate, Sudan Black, and Iodine Spray Reagent. For example, the standard operating procedure for the use of Amido Black requires the following equipment: scales, beakers, graduated cylinder, magnetic stirrer and stirring bar, squirt bottles or sprayer, and clear or dark storage bottles. Necessary chemicals and materials for the use of Amido Black are Naphthol blue black, glacial acetic acid, and methanol. The mixing procedure is enumerated followed by the processing procedure, proper storage, shelf life, and disposal requirements. Optional processes are also covered and include procedures for Ardrox, Coomassie Brilliant Blue, Crowle’s Double Stain, and Rhodamine. A chart is presented that illustrates the standard procedures by type of method. Also addressed in this report are safety considerations, laboratory chemicals and equipment commonly used, and a chart of weights, measures, and temperature.
