This report provides information about patients subject to a restriction order admitted to, detained in, or discharged from hospitals in England and Wales in 2005.
Abstract
Main points from this report on mentally disordered offenders in 2005 include: (1) 3,395 patients in the hospital at the end of 2005, up 3 percent from 2004; (2) 1,350 admissions to the hospital in 2005, up 2 percent from 2004; (3) 1,133 discharges of restricted patients of whom 469 were discharged into the community in 2005; (4) 779 patients detained at the end of 2005 following transfer from prison was up 12 percent from 2004; and (5) 187 restricted patients recalled to the hospital after a conditional discharge was up 38, or 26 percent, from 2004. Additionally, 74 percent of those detained were diagnosed as having a mental illness, with or without other disorders; the number admitted under restricted hospital orders remained stable compared to 2004 figures at 292 (or 22 percent of total admissions, and 843 patients were discharged for the first time between 1999 and the end of 2003; and of the 717 matched cases, a total of fewer than 1 in 10 of those reoffended within 2 years of discharge.
