This booklet is designed to be a ready reference on current trends and patterns in crime and criminal justice in Australia as of 2006.
Abstract
It addresses various types of recorded crimes, their locations, victim characteristics, responses of criminal justice agencies, and government resources devoted to crime. Data are presented on homicide, assault, sexual assault, robbery, unlawful entry with intent, motor vehicle theft, other theft, fraud and deception-related crime, and drug arrests. A section on crime victimization focuses on percentages of criminal victimization and computer-related criminal victimization. A section on selected offender profiles addresses alleged offenders, Federal offenders, drug use by offenders, the characteristics of police detainees, and the percentage of adult male police detainees by most serious offense for each of the years 2002-2005. A section on criminal courts provides data and information on the criminal court process, court decisions, and sentencing. Corrections data and information pertains to the number of individuals under various types of corrections management, trends in and characteristics of prison populations, community corrections, and juvenile correctional institutions. The booklet concludes with data and information on criminal justice resources expended for police, courts, and adult corrections. 32 references
