This 16th annual publication of data collected by the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) for Federal fiscal year 2005 presents complete national information on child maltreatment known to States' child protective services (CPS).
Abstract
During fiscal year 2005, an estimated 899,000 children in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico were determined by CPS agencies to be victims of abuse or neglect. This increase from the previous fiscal year (approximately 20,000) was due to the inclusion of data from Alaska and Puerto Rico for fiscal year 2005. Since 2001, the rate and number of children who received a maltreatment investigation have been increasing. For fiscal year 2001, the rate was 43.2 children per thousand children; and for fiscal year 2005, the rate was 48.3. Nationally, 62.8 percent of child victims experienced neglect, 16.6 percent were physically abused, 9.3 percent were sexually abused, and 7.1 percent were emotionally or psychologically maltreated. Rates of victimization by maltreatment type have varied only slightly over the past several years. For fiscal year 2005, an estimated 1,460 children died of abuse or neglect nationwide, a rate of 1.96 children per 100,000 in the national population. For the previous fiscal year, the rate was 2.03. This report also provides data on national-level and State-level perpetrators of child maltreatment, CPS staff workload, and prevention and postinvestigation services. Tables and notes accompany each chapter. Appended required data items, glossary, data submissions and elements, State commentary, and reader survey
