Abstract

Most incarcerated offenders will be released back into society at some point. Estimates indicate that over 27,000 offenders have been released in Ohio during the past 12 months. The Ohio Parole Board plays a crucial role in deciding whether an offender is fit to be released into society. The role of the Ohio Parole Board is described, which is responsible for making release decisions for all offenders serving life sentences and for all offenders who committed crimes prior to July 1996. During their considerations, the Parole Board takes into account public safety and is primarily interested in what the offender has been doing with his or her time in prison. At this point, the authors introduce Khalil Osiris, who served a total of 15 years in prison during 2 periods of incarceration. During his second incarceration, Osiris decided to turn prison into a learning environment in which he treated every job as an opportunity to learn job skills. He also earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Boston University during his incarceration. During his parole consideration, Osiris was able to demonstrate that he had spent time and effort to better himself and to seek employment prior to release. Today, Osiris teaches courses at Wright State University and directs the Cincinnati Youth Collaborator’s Strengthening Partnerships and Resources for Kids Program. He is also currently working on his memoir and has co-authored two other books, one of which is the basis for his Wright State University course.
