This report presents an overview and highlights of accomplishments and activities of the Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) program from 2002 to 2008.
Abstract
Volunteer in Police Service (VIPS) is one of five Citizen Corps partner programs managed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in partnership with the White House Office of the USA Freedom Corps and the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. The VIPS Program provides support and resources for agencies interested in developing or enhancing a volunteer program and for citizens who want to volunteer their time and skills with a community law enforcement agency. The program has several objectives; however, their main goal is to enhance the capacity of State and local law enforcement to utilize volunteers. The VIPS Program offers several resources, which are highlighted in this report, such as searchable directory summarizing volunteer opportunities available in law enforcement agencies across the country, three training course for volunteer managers, a mentor program that pairs law enforcement volunteer managers in need of support with experienced practitioners, educational videos, and a moderated online discussion group for law enforcement volunteer programs leaders to share information and ideas. The report concludes with highlights for each individual year represented, 2002 through 2008, providing information on number of programs, volunteers, Web site hits, events, presentations, site visits, and exhibits by month.
