Major findings from this report found that for the period July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007, and the previous 5 years, homicide rates in Australia had fallen by one third; almost 70 percent of the victims and 80 percent of the offenders of homicides were males; females were victims of homicide at a greater rate than they were offenders of homicide; firearm homicides continued to decline, following a decade long trend; rates of intimate partner homicide remained constant for the period; the majority of the child homicide victims were killed by a parent (84 percent); 13 percent of homicides were committed in the course of another crime; and Indigenous men were 7 times more likely to be offenders than non-Indigenous men.
