Highlights from the Australian crime survey include: assault was the most commonly recorded violent crime in 2001 (78 percent); for 1995 to 2001, the number of assaults increased by 49 percent, the number of robbery offenses increased by 82 percent, the number of sexual assaults increased by 28 percent, and the number of homicides remained relatively stable; in 2001, other theft accounted for 55 percent of property crime victims; between 1995 and 2001, unlawful entry with intent and motor vehicle theft increased by 13 percent and 10 percent, respectively; and property offenses accounted for 87 percent of the seven major crimes in 2001, the same percentage since 1995. Data for this report were collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and provide a national picture of crime in Australia. The report is divided into seven sections that include data on: 1) Recorded crime - crimes know to police and location of crime; 2) Selected crime profiles on homicide, assault, sexual assault, robbery, unlawful entry with intent, motor vehicle theft, and other; 3) Alleged offenders by gender, age, females, juveniles, and specific offenses; 4) Criminal courts - structure of criminal courts in Australia and the criminal court process; 5) Corrections - persons under corrective services, prisons, community corrections, and juvenile corrective institutions; 6) Criminal justice resources - juvenile expenditures, police, court administration, and adult corrective services; and 7) Drug-related statistics.
