Divided into several sections, this manual will offer National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) members and domestic violence advocates with everything from an explanation of how a bill becomes a law to how to contact your Member of Congress to encourage him/her to support a specific piece of legislation. In addition, samples are provided in the areas of writing, calling, and thanking your legislator, as well as writing a press release or writing to the editor. Community outreach samples are offered in organizing a town hall meeting and inviting your legislator to a community event. The manual concludes with rules for Federal lobbying, resources, and Web site resources. Legislative action is an important part of the movement to end domestic violence. Making one’s views known to their legislator can help create laws and secure the funds necessary to influence Federal legislation and the distribution of funds.
