This study explored potential predictors of suicide among Norwegian police officers.
Abstract
Police officers who reported some suicidal ideation were more likely to be single, to report higher levels of both exhaustion and cynicism, to engage in less active coping strategies, and to report lower levels of social support. The findings suggest that police departments could lower suicidal ideation among police officers by reducing levels of burnout, increasing social support, and highlighting the benefits of active coping strategies. Future research should focus on exploring predictors of suicide among police officers in other countries. Participants were 766 police officers throughout Norway. Participants completed mailed anonymous questionnaires that collected information about the personal demographic characteristics, work situation, burnout, work outcomes, coping resources, and suicidal ideation. Data were analyzed using logistic regression models. Figure, tables, references
