In 2006, Missouri had a total of 167,143 traffic crashes. The economic loss associated with these traffic crashes was estimated to be $3,492,730,000. In these crashes, 0.6 percent (971) involved one or more persons being killed. In addition, 25.2 percent (42,138) involved no persons being killed but one or more persons being injured in the incident. In 2006, a total of 1,096 persons died in Missouri traffic crashes. One person was killed every 8.0 hours. The death rate in 2006 was 1.6 (number of deaths per 100 million miles of travel) and in 2005, it was 1.8. A total of 62,078 persons were injured in traffic crashes in 2006, which is one person every 8.5 minutes. Data are provided in this compendium identifying causal factors or characteristics of Missouri's traffic crash experience which directly impact the frequency of occurrence or personal death and injury severity levels. A brief analysis of these causal factors is provided and includes: (1) speed involvement; (2) drinking involvement; (3) young driver involvement; (4) commercial motor vehicle involvement; (5) motorcycle involvement; (6) school bus involvement; (7) pedestrian involvement; (8) hazardous material involvement; (9) seat belt usage; (10) construction/other work zone involvement; and (11) bicycle involvement. This report provides data identifying the scope, magnitude, and severity of the traffic crash problem in Missouri for the year 2006.
