Immigration patterns and projected growth throughout the United States will cause the issue of immigration to be one of continuing importance to all local law enforcement agencies. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) believes that agencies armed with solid, reliable information on the complex set of immigration issues can arrive at just and effective local policies to respond to these issues in their respective jurisdictions. The immigration issues addressed in this guide include: historical perspective, legal update on immigration law, immigration and community issues, challenges facing law enforcement, immigration and crime of both victims and perpetrators. Project Response is a periodic initiative of the IACP to supply salient information and discussion points on critical issues of current and emerging significance to law enforcement professionals. Project Response reports are designed for police leaders. This report or guide focuses on the issue of immigration and the current issues confronting Federal, State, tribal, and local law enforcement agencies within the United States. Appendix and references
