The Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption was established "to improve the capacity of and cooperation between States Parties to achieve the objectives set forth in this Convention and to promote and review its implementation." In order to assist the Conference in fulfilling its mission, this paper presents an overview of existing compliance mechanisms of regional, sectoral, and international instruments and summarizes the mechanisms used to review the implementation of anticorruption instruments that are either limited in scope or in geographic reach. The paper also contains information on review mechanisms used for global instruments in other areas. Compliance mechanisms are outlined for the human rights instruments, the instruments for the protection of the ozone layer, and the international drug control conventions. Information is also provided on the review of the implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime. The paper concludes with suggestions for an effective review mechanism for the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
