Generally, behavioral approach and avoidant-coping strategies were related to delinquent behavior, however, contrary to previous research, reward responsiveness was negatively related to delinquent behavior. Specifically, reward responsiveness was positively related to the use of problem-solving strategies, which in turn was negatively related to delinquency. The results support previous research which found a positive relationship between reward responsiveness and problem solving in delinquent youth, and suggest that the coping strategies may play a salient role in delinquent behavior. The results suggest that the 1970 Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory has applicability to describing delinquent behavior, particularly when proximal factors such as coping strategies are also considered. Consequently, it was suggested that coping skills training could be an effective early intervention for delinquent behavior. Since 1964, the relationship between personality and criminal behavior has been extensively studied. Specifically, Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory provides an alternative conceptualization of the role of personality in criminal behavior, and has generally produced more consistent findings. This study sought to examine the relationship between reinforcement sensitivity and delinquent behavior in a sample of 259 adolescents, and to examine the role that coping strategies play in this relationship.
