Findings suggest numerous causes for the serious DUI problem in Hillsborough County, all requiring attention if change is to occur. According to the study, gaps in prevention policy, law enforcement, the legal system, and treatment programs all remain major roadblocks to success. Several key recommendations and potential solutions were suggested through the interviews, as well as other observations for reducing DUI offenses in Hillsborough County; these include: (1) harsher laws and penalties; (2) inclusion of a DUI court; (3) increase in education; (4) collaboration among key stakeholders; (5) increased public awareness; and (6) increased transportation. Barriers were identified with several key issues needing to be considered: (1) funding; (2) recruitment; and (3) support and dedication. With collaboration and thorough understanding of the DUI issue, substantial improvements in Hillsborough County can progress. Driving under the influence (DUI) is a serious crime that contributes to approximately 9 percent of traffic-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities in the State of Florida. Specifically, Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, has the highest rate of DUI-related occurrences in the State. There are several gaps in policy, law enforcement, and treatment that need to be addressed before Hillsborough County can shed this dubious distinction.
