The increased and effective use of rigid-hull inflatable boats (RIBs) by law enforcement agencies to keep ports safe and secure is discussed.
Abstract
Inflatable boats are becoming more familiar to law enforcement agencies, with many versatile and useful features for increased port safety. Compared to hard-sided boats, the rigid-hull inflatable boats (RIBs) offer improved flotation and absorb impact. The RIBs can be run at higher speeds in rougher water without tearing the officers’ body apart. The combination of the deep ‘V’ design with the inflatable collar which acts as a shock absorber makes for a very stable work platform at rest. Because of their design, the RIBs are able to slice through the water, and because these boats are very forgiving, they are ideal for agencies that may not have fulltime marine patrol units. Over the years, these vessels have become a great deal more sophisticated. There are many manufacturers offering varying options and choices to law enforcement agencies based on their needs and situations, such as Bullfrog Boats Inc., North River Boats Inc., Northwind Marine Inc., and SeaArk Marine Inc.
