Weed and Seed success stories are presented in the areas of law enforcement, community policing, prevention, neighborhood restoration, reentry, and American Indian/Alaska Native. Highlights of these stories from various programs working to prevent crime and provide safer communities within the Weed and Seed strategy and presented in this report include: (1) the Safe Zone project in Baltimore, MD targeting high-crime districts by increasing police presence and blocking off all traffic from 2 to 10 p.m., allowing only residents and legitimate business personnel in the area to enter; (2) the establishing of neighborhood watches in Manchester, NH to reduce gang activity; (3) incorporating teens into the community with the development of a drug-free place, “The Spot” at the Alamosa (New Mexico) where teens come to dance on Friday nights; (4) community collaboration in graffiti abatement in Dallas City; (5) development of the model, Citizen Circles, involving many people, such as corrections and parole officers, specialists, and trained laypeople in the successful reentry of ex-offenders; and (6) development of a DVD, by the Tribal Justice Information Sharing System (TJISS) to help tribes assess their technological needs and how best to fulfill them. This report, from the Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO), presents and offers the stories of Weed and Seed strategies implemented across the United States that have been effective in crime prevention and community safety.
