Report highlights include: (1) Virginia’s violent and property crime rates continue to be below national rates and rates for most bordering States; (2) during the last decade violent and property crime rates declined by 18 percent and 29.6 percent, respectively; (3) forcible rape was the only violent index crime rate to increase from 2005 to 2006; (4) the property crime rate was the lowest in 2006 when compared to the United States and border States; (5) the drug arrest rate has remained below rates for most bordering States during the last decade; (6) Virginia’s violent crime rate has been below the national rate since the 1960s and has trended downward since the 1990s; and (7) the property crime rate has been below the national rate since 1960, and tracks closely the United States trend. This report provides information and data on Virginia’s crime trends for 1997 to 2006, as well as a historical perspective of crime from 1960 to 2006. Graphs
