Highlights of crime and arrest data in Wisconsin for 2006 include: (1) on average, one violent crime was reported every 32 minutes, 23 seconds and one property crime was reported every 3 minutes, 18 seconds; (2) a total of 434,139 arrests were made, an increase of 2.5 percent from 2005; (3) overall, 25.0 percent of the Index Crimes were cleared by arrest or exceptional means, a slight decrease from the 2005; (4) violent crime increased by 18.8 percent from 13,660 offenses to 16,223 offenses; (5) murder decreased by 20.3 percent from 207 during 2005 to 165; (6) handguns were involved in 42.1 percent of murders, more than the 34.7 percent during 2005; (7) robbery increased by 22.9 percent; (8) forcible rape increased by 1.2 percent; (9) nearly 50 percent of those arrested for motor vehicle theft were juveniles; (10) the most common bias motivations for hate crime were racial (35) and ethnic (13); the most common offenses were destruction, damage, or vandalism (25) and simple assault (20); (11) the 743 assaults on law enforcement officers were 50.1 percent more than the 495 assaults in 2005; and (12) there was an average of 2.31 sworn officers per 1,000 Wisconsin residents, slightly lower than the 2005 average of 2.34. Based on monthly crime and arrest reports submitted by Wisconsin law enforcement agencies to the Office of Justice Assistance’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, this report presents statewide information on crime and arrests along with individual sections on each Index Crime and contains more detailed crime and arrest information for individual jurisdictions and counties within the State.
