Abstract
Identity theft is a growing crisis in the State of Connecticut and throughout the United States. Identity theft occurs when someone uses a person’s name, social security number, credit card, or any other piece of personal information to commit fraud or theft. Statistics in Connecticut suggest that seniors are less victimized by identity theft than the rest of the population; however, they can be targeted in financial scams. Skilled identity thieves use a variety of methods to gain access to individuals’ personal information, such as rummaging through trash, stealing credit and debit card numbers, stealing mail, and scamming information by posing as legitimate business persons or government officials. To reduce or minimize the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft and/or fraud individuals should be “stingy” with personal information, check financial information regularly, get and review credit reports, and maintain careful records. Several steps can be taken following victimization of identity theft and include: (1) document actions, (2) contact local law enforcement, (3) contact credit bureaus, (4) contact relevant creditors, (5) contact the bank, (6) contact check verification companies, (7) contact utility and service providers, (8) contact the Social Security Administration, (9) contact the IRS, (10) contact the post office, (11) contact the Federal Trade Commission, and (12) contact an attorney. This guide offers Connecticut citizens a better understanding of the nature of identity theft and describes how identity theft is committed, how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft, and what to do if one becomes a victim.
