The findings show that male victims of sexual assault tended to be young, single men who reported high rates of risk variables, including homelessness and physical, psychiatric, and cognitive disabilities. Those assaulted by strangers were more likely to be confronted with a weapon and experience physical violence. Stranger sexual assaults were also more likely to involve multiple assailants. Acquaintance assaults on male victims were more likely to involve victims' alcohol use. In terms of victim service delivery, the proportion of completed physical exams and forensic evidence kits was similar for both male and female victims of sexual assault. These results challenge some of the stereotypes about male sexual assault and its victims in showing the significant amount of violence used against men during such assaults. Further, variables related to victimization risk have been identified for the design of prevention programs. Data for this study were obtained from a Canadian Sexual Assault Care Center database that includes nonidentifying medical and nursing information collected by intake and treatment personnel at a hospital emergency department and Sexual Assault Care Center of a large urban hospital in Ontario, Canada. Three groups were included in the study: males sexually assaulted by a stranger (n=64), males sexually assaulted by an acquaintance (n=81), and a comparison group of females sexually assaulted by an acquaintance (n=106). 4 tables and 24 references
