The results of this study identified the most frequently stolen cell phones in the United Kingdom by make and model for the years 2004 and 2005. It presents what is termed as the first “Phone Theft Index,” similar to the Car Theft Index in the United Kingdom, ranking the most stolen makes and models of mobile cell phones. The theft "careers" of key phone models are examined. Results show that the dynamic market for mobile phones is that particular models come and go quickly from sale to resale (including theft) markets. The market for mobile cell phones is indicated to change rapidly, as shown in theft career trajectories. Proposed are subsequent steps in the development of such an index, citing a need for it to be risk-based, and routinely publicized on a timely and frequent basis. Also cited is the development of complementary publications of information on "safe" handsets and practices to stimulate the market in consumer safety. Data used were from over 200,000 recorded crimes by police in Greater London involving such types of theft during 2004 and 2005. Tables, figures, references
