As part of a major new series of “Dictionaries” from Willan Publishing, this volume defines many of the major terms and concepts used in the discussion of contemporary policing in Great Britain, particularly as used in the Handbook of Policing (Newburn, 2003).
Abstract
The focus of the Dictionary is policing within the United Kingdom; however, wherever possible, attention is given to international issues that bear upon policing in the United Kingdom. There are just over 200 entries selected and defined by academic and professionals in or connected with the British Police Service. Individual entries vary in length, ranging from 500 to 1,500 words. The entries, however, all have a standard format. Each starts with a short definition. The main content of the entry is then presented, followed by a set of “Key texts and sources.” The latter contains key Web site references as well as standard forms of publication. The user is pointed to the next steps that might be taken in exploring a particular area related to the entry. Related entries in the Dictionary are also indicated. Appendices, references and index
