This article provides an overview on elder abuse in South Africa.
Abstract
The article presents a summary of various issues related to elder abuse in South Africa, and identifies areas in need of further scrutiny. The lack of even a consistent definition is highlighted, as the term itself is problematic due to a lack of consensus on what constitutes abuse in local settings. Neither were specific types of abuse manifested in that society covered by definitions used in Western countries, nor do the types of abuse fit Western typologies. The article notes that expanded typologies are needed to classify certain types of commonly reported abuse, such as marginalization, disrespect, exploitation, and violence. The work traces the history of elder abuse and responses. Relevant legislation and selected intervention programs are also reviewed, along with an evaluation of the research and status of elder abuse. It is noted that interventions to address sociostructural factors that impact elders’ settings, increase their vulnerability, and diminish their ability to realize human rights could contribute to an improvement in their condition and a reduction in abuse and rights violations in the long-term.
