This paper summarizes the content of this journal with a collection of articles on new models and directions in the delivery of services in community supervision.
Abstract
Supervision is an undervalued part of the correctional services. This collection of articles fosters a discussion about community supervision by examining new directions that build on the prior work of the 1990s. With over 6 million adults and over 500,000 youth under some form of supervision, there is a renewed importance placed on improving outcomes from community supervision. The new approaches provide a reenergized confidence in the effectiveness of community supervision. The current trend in the supervision field is to adopt “evidence-based practices.” A new generation of innovations is occurring in the supervision field that is directed at interaction between the offender and the supervision employer for the purpose of building a rapport that can lead to behavior change. The historical context for this change in style of supervision is presented, as well as a description of articles that are geared to new models for delivering supervision services. References
