In dealing with clandestine drug lab sites, the literature has dictated that these sites be thoroughly evaluated and remediated before they can be used again. Depending on the extent and severity of the contamination noted in the preliminary site assessment (PSA), conducted in the early phases of remediation, a more comprehensive assessment may prove beneficial and time-saving. In other words, a strategic sampling of the lab site is suggested in order to positively quantify where contamination exists and pinpoint areas needing remediation. Once the sampling data is acquired, the specific target areas requiring cleanup can be addressed. Knowing the types of surfaces in the target areas allows for the evaluation of the best remediation technique, such as removal, surface washing, and encapsulation.
