The review of the literature identified three major themes: (1) power and control plays a major role in abuse; (2) abuse reverberates throughout the entire family structure (e.g., domestic violence often coexists with child abuse); and (3) as a theoretical focus, psychological abuse is more important than physical abuse. Practice recommendations presented are to (1) distinguish between “abuse” (with power dynamics) and “mistreatment” (without), (2) consider structural limitations of practice, and (3) assess the role of perpetrator pathologies. Practitioners need a broader understanding of the dynamics of abuse, how to detect abuse and intervene earlier, and how to keep clients safe. Although progress has been made within each, there is the need to learn about situations beyond their boundaries. A focus on power and control dynamics in all relationships can help accomplish this. What happens when practitioners/workers encounter a situation that is abusive, but which spans more than one category or which falls into a gap between categories? How do they intervene in situations falling between the fields of child abuse, domestic violence, and elder abuse? What models are available to help practitioners understand these kinds of situations and provide an adequate response? This literature review explores some theoretical issues, using the lens of power and control. Notes and references
