This booklet, written for families that have a member who is dependent on alcohol or drugs, answers questions often asked by family members when someone in the family enters drug treatment.
Abstract
The booklet first defines substance abuse, as it explains why some people develop a substance abuse problem and others do not and describes the symptoms of substance-use disorders. In describing the features of substance abuse treatment, the booklet addresses who provides treatment, the first phase of treatment, the types of treatment programs available, the elements of treatment programs, and why treatment programs take such a long time. The elements of treatment programs described are assessment, medical care, the treatment plan, group and individual counseling, individual assignments, education about substance use disorders, life-skills training, testing for alcohol or drug use, relapse prevention training, orientation to self-help groups, treatment for mental disorders, family education and counseling services, medication, and continuing care. One section of the booklet discusses some of the changes that may occur in family interactions and needs while treatment is underway, changes that may require counseling and financial assistance for the family. A discussion of what to expect from the treatment program advises that relapse is often a part of the recovery process and that family members can have a part in reinforcing positive behaviors and helping avoid negative behaviors. The booklet concludes with a special message of encouragement and advice to young family members whose parents enter substance-use treatment. A glossary and list of organizational resources
