An outcome management approach to service delivery on the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) provides a mechanism for ongoing evaluation of the quality of care by providing standardized data on the characteristics, needs, and outcomes of youth served. This information allows for the development of targeted and individualized programming and informs further development of the model. This approach is an exciting example of how to successfully bridge the gap between research and clinical practice. The Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at CHEO has been successful in fully integrating research and clinical practice into a newly developed model of service delivery for youth. Unique profiles of youth within each clinical pathway provide further validation for the new model of care and guide further development of the model. The objective of this study was to describe characteristics and outcomes of youth aged 7 to 17 who received inpatient psychiatric and mental health services along different clinical pathways of a new service delivery model.
