This manual provides a comprehensive resource curriculum for instructors of the national Teens, Crime, and the Community (TCC) Program’s new initiative, Community Works, providing an interactive means to address some of the issues most pressing to today’s youth.
Abstract
Community Works, supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) combines education and action to reduce teen victimization and involve young people in service to their communities. The program develops self-esteem, leadership, and citizenship skills by engaging young people in action to positively affect the circumstances of their lives. This manual (action kit) is intended to provide everything an agency or organization needs to establish a program that will motivate young people to take safety seriously. The Community Works Program provides a practical understanding of crime and crime prevention that is useful in the everyday lives of young people, teaches young people to be resources for each other and to interact positively with community members, develops each young person’s communication and problem-solving skills promoting personal and project success in their community, and encourages young people to focus on their own leadership role in the community. The first three sections at the beginning of the manual provide detailed information on implementing the Community Works program. These sections are followed by eight major parts (you and your community, conflict management, violent crimes, substance abuse and drug dealing, property crime, hate crimes, police and community, and action projects). The manual provides everything a group leader or instructor needs to teach a session including detailed lesson plans, teen handouts, program planning advice, posters, and a youth-oriented video which takes teens through the process of designing and conducting an action project. This program manual was produced by the national Teens, Crime, and the Community (TCC) program through support from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).
