Abstract
More than 100 tables provide comprehensive national trend data on drug use and abuse, as well as State, local, and international trend data. Highlights of 27 data tables on drug use include: (1) estimated number of users of selected illegal drugs, 1979-2007 (in thousands); (2) illicit drug use by current employment status, 1995-2007; (3) percentage of high school students who used cocaine by sex, race/ethnicity, and grade, youth risk behavior survey, 1990-2007; and (4) substance abuse among State prison inmates and Federal prison inmates. Highlights of 16 data tables on national drug use consequences include: (1) number of deaths from drug-induced causes, by sex and race, 1979-2005; (2) illicit drugs in drug-related emergency department visits, 2004-2006; and (3) total estimated arrests and drug arrests, 1989-2007. Highlights of four data tables on national drug treatment include: (1) 1-day census of clients in treatment, by facility ownership, 1980-2006 and (2) estimated number of persons age 12 or older who needed and received treatment for an illicit drug problem in the past year, by demographic characteristics, 2002-2007 (in thousands). Highlights of 10 data tables on national drug user expenditures and availability include: (1) total United States expenditures on illicit drugs, 1988-2000 (money in billions); (2) average price of marijuana in the United States, 1981-2007; and (3) domestic drug consumption, calendar years 1996-2000 (metric tons). Similar data is presented within the remaining tables on a State, local, and international level. Measures of various facets of the drug situation are compiled in this report as a reference on what is known about drug use and abuse, its consequences, illicit drug production and trafficking, and other related statistics.
