This overview of the future of interventions to reduce intimate partner violence (IPV) identifies and discusses features of effective interventions.
Abstract
Principles for developing effective interventions for IPV are presented as the “Three R’s:” resources, research/evaluation, and response. Without resources, the other principles of effective intervention could not occur. Without funding, research and evaluation cannot occur; and without research and evaluation there is a limited knowledge base for the development of effective responses to IPV. In the area of resources, funding enables the creation of other resources, such as staff, housing, transportation, mental and substance abuse services, legal services, child care and child services, community education, language services, and basic necessities for IPV victims. A discussion of research and evaluation methods discusses the definition of violence against women, the assessment of efficiency and effectiveness of IPV interventions, and the knowledge gained from research and evaluation. The discussion of responses to IPV addresses legislation, the responsibilities of the justice system, health care services, and community-based programs and services. 26 references
