This article examines how police departments can take the lead in their communities in making changes toward a greener workplace.
Abstract
Police departments have the option and ability to be leaders in their communities and set an example. These agencies can earn the respect of the communities that they serve as well as be pioneers in the green movement. Emphasizing green practices in the work environment is an educational tool, teaching workers/officers strategies to improve their own homes. Administrators can assess their buildings and determine what changes can be made to make the building more energy efficient, reduce water consumption, and ensure that the equipment is being recycled and supplies are being purchased with these issues in mind. This article examines how law enforcement administrators can be effective in emphasizing environmentally preferable methods in the areas of water consumption, electricity, heat, recycling, and supplies.
