Highlights of Maryland’s 2007 Uniform Crime Report (UCR) include: (1) crime decreased 2 percent when compared to 2006; (2) there were 228,859 total crime incidents reported in 2007 compared to 233,590 in 2006; (3) violent crime decreased 1 percent (i.e., murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault); (4) property crime decreased 5 percent; (5) arrests decreased 2 percent in comparison to 2006 with 298,320 reported in 2007 compared to 305,675 in 2006; (6) of the total arrests, 84 percent were adults, a decrease of 2 percent over 2006; (7) juvenile arrests accounted for 16 percent of arrests, a 2-percent decrease over 2006; (8) 24,189 persons were arrested for driving while intoxicated, an increase of less than 1 percent over similar arrests reported in 2006; (9) 4 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty and 4,024 officers were assaulted, a 4-percent decrease over similar assaults reported in 2006; and (10) a 3-percent increase in full-time law enforcement officers was reported, with 15,465 in 2007 compared to 15,048 in 2006. The statewide UCR Program was developed to report crime in Maryland to the National UCR Program. The UCR Program collects index crime data which are murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, breaking and entering, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. Maryland also collects and reports data on domestic violence, hate bias, and carjacking incidents and arrests.
