In examining international data, youth violence is a serious and widespread problem around the world. Although there are significant differences in the rates of violence between countries and regions, there is also a common strand; youth are not only the main perpetrators of such violence, but also the main victims. In order to reverse the trend of youth violence, it is necessary to find explanations. One factor of particular note that stands out is the importance of the socioeconomic status of family and of youth. Youth employment is identified as the foundation of criminality. Young people are especially affected by economic disintegration. Several studies found that nations with stronger social welfare policies had lower homicide rates, whereas nations without a functional differentiated welfare system, economic and social inequality were closely linked with homicide rates. 26 notes
