This paper discusses the state of the literature regarding Latino early adolescents.
Abstract
The articles included in this special issue advance the literature on Latino early adolescents with respect to normative developmental issues salient during this developmental period such as academic achievement, quality of the parent-child relationship, externalizing and internalizing behaviors, and cultural values. Based on the findings from these studies, and the preliminary nature of some of the results, this special issue is replete with ideas for future research. Hopefully this collection of studies serves as a springboard for rigorously designed and conceptually driven future studies that will contribute to the knowledge base of Latino early adolescents’ developmental processes and outcomes. Finally, future direction for research on Latino early adolescents is discussed, including utilizing assessments from multiple informants, accounting for the diverse demographic characteristic of Latinos (linguistic, socioeconomic, and geographic diversity), and focusing more prominently on resilience and how Latino adolescents’ culturally related strengths may minimize the negative effects of commonly experienced stressors.
