The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice of the United Nations' Economic and Social Council presents an overview of the Commission's work in implementing the Council's resolution 2006/29 of July 27, 2006, which pertains to crime prevention and criminal justice responses to violence against women and girls.
Abstract
The resolution urged member states to consider using the Model Strategies and Practical Measures on the Elimination of Violence Against Women in the Field of Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in developing and undertaking strategies and practical measures for eliminating violence against women and in promoting women's equality in the criminal justice system. It also encouraged member states to develop an explicit policy for integrating gender issues into the development and implementation of policies and programs in crime prevention and criminal justice, so as to counter violence against women and girls. Further, the resolution requested the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime ("the Office") to consider providing assistance to member states in developing crime prevention and criminal justice responses to violence against women and girls. In response to the Commission's request for member states to report on their implementation of the resolution, 26 member states have thus far reported. The replies addressed each of the areas included in the resolution. Member states reported on national action plans, legislation and judicial procedures, police efforts, victim support and assistance, training, information campaigns, research and data collection, ensuring effective criminal justice responses to violence against women and girls, and special measures regarding child victims of violence. All of these countries reported actions being taken to ensure that national strategies, action plans, and related legislative framework included specific provision and/or guidelines for ensuring effective criminal justice responses to violence against women.
