Highlights of some of the Commission’s most notable accomplishments from 1993 to 2008 include: (1) safe schools; (2) establishment of the Criminal Justice Information Network (CJIN); (3) community policing; (4) juvenile justice reform; (5) addressing the issue of suspended and expelled youth; (6) advocating for victims’ rights; (7) drug trafficking interdiction; (8) addressing disproportionate minority contact (DMC); (9) confronting gangs; and (10) preventing child abuse and neglect. The North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission began as a result of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 and has been a catalyst in the accomplishment of many of the major criminal justice initiatives of the past 16 years. The Commission has positively changed the North Carolina juvenile and criminal justice systems, victims’ services, and contributed to community safety and security.
