This annual report provides statistical information on the number of arrests, referrals, petitions, and dispositions for juveniles tried in California juvenile and adult courts for 2007.
Abstract
Highlights of arrest data on reported juvenile arrests made by law enforcement personnel in 2007 include: (1) more than half of the juveniles were arrested for a misdemeanor offense (56.8 percent), a quarter were arrested for a felony offense (27.9 percent), and the remainder (15.2 percent) were arrested for a status offense and (2) 8 out of 10 juveniles arrested were referred to county juvenile probation departments. Highlights of referral data on juveniles who have been brought to the attention of the county probation department include: (1) nearly 90 percent (89.8 percent) of juveniles referred to county probation departments were referred by law enforcement and (2) one-half (50 percent) of the total juveniles referred to county probation departments resulted in the filing of a petition for formal juvenile court adjudication. Highlights of petition data on juveniles whose cases have proceeded for formal processing to the juvenile court include: (1) of the juveniles handled formally by the juvenile court, the majority (60.5 percent) were made wards of the court and (2) nearly one-fifth (19.1 percent) of the petitions for formal juvenile adjudication were dismissed. Highlights of disposition data on juveniles processed through the adult court system include: more than three-fourths (79.5 percent) of the juvenile dispositions filed in adult court resulted in a conviction. The California Department of Justice is responsible for collecting and reporting statistics on juvenile justice in California. This report provides insight to the juvenile justice process by reporting information on the number of arrests, referrals to probation departments, petitions filed, and dispositions for juveniles tried in juvenile and adult courts for 2007.
