The total number of offenses reported on Tennessee's campuses decreased 1.4 percent from 2005, with 8,425 offenses reported in 2006 and 8,541 reported in 2005. There was a 2.3-percent decrease from 2004 to 2005, with 8,541 offenses reported in 2005 compared to 8,744 offenses reported in 2004. Between 2003 and 2004, the number of offenses reported increased 6.7 percent. Larceny/theft offenses continued to constitute the largest percentage of offenses reported, composing 34.8 percent of the campus crimes reported in 2006. They composed 34.3 percent of the reported offenses in 2005; however, the percentage of these offenses was lower than in 2003 (41.4 percent) and 2002 (42.2 percent). Drug/narcotic offenses decreased 10.5 percent from 2005. There were 21 reported rapes on campuses in 2006 compared to 16 reported in 2005 (31.3-percent increase). Reported robberies increased by 45.2 percent, with 31 robberies reported in 2005 and 45 reported in 2006. Reported crimes against college students that occurred off campus continued to increase; however, this might be partly attributed to the increased effort of law enforcement agencies to identify victims as college students in reported crimes off campus. Data are provided for each reporting institution. The "Crime on Campus" reporting program is operated under the requirements of the College and University Security Information Act, which requires each institution of higher education to report to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation data relating to crimes that occur on the campus and in student housing.
