This study examined violence prevention in schools by examining one group of private schools operated by the Society of Jesus.
Abstract
Findings indicate that the network of private schools studied has taken important steps to prevent school violence. The schools have focused on creating welcoming environments for students that engender student ownership of the school through involvement in school programs. Involvement in these programs such as religious retreats and curricula that aid in the formation of student moral character, bring about a care and concern for others that is a protective factor against using violence to solve problems. A relationship exists between triggers for violence and serious violent incidents; by identifying school based triggers for serious violence and working to eliminate or substantially minimize these triggers in schools, school personnel can take important steps to prevent violence. Partnerships with parents and area schools were identified by respondents as effective violence prevention strategies. Schools can maximize these relationships by sharing research with parents. Data were collected from all 47 Society of Jesus secondary schools using a survey method. Tables, figure, and references
