The opportunity to engage in the Fulbright Alumni Initiative Award exchange program has enabled those who have participated to develop both personally and professionally and gain insights into ways of developing an effective school resource officer program for the benefit of young people. The Fulbright Alumni Initiative Award provided many opportunities for exchange offices and resulted in increased research and awareness in the area of school/community safety and school policing on an international scale. The Fulbright Alumni Initiative Award is a multiyear exchange program. It was developed as a result of a pilot experiment in a North London secondary school which enabled a police officer to work fulltime in that school and upon completion of that year the officer traveled to the United States for a 6-month Fulbright Police Research Award to examine the role of police officers who had been working in schools for the past 15 years. The Fulbright Alumni Initiatives Award is a collaborative school resource officer exchange with United Kingdom officers and officers in the United States. The program provides small institutional grants to Fulbright alumni to develop innovative projects fostering institutionally supported linkages and sustainable and beneficial relationships between the Fulbright scholar's home and host institutions. This paper outlines the findings that this partnership award afforded the two principle researchers through interaction with exchange efforts and participating school resource officers. References
