The value in a risk assessment lies in its ability to generate reasonable and practical ideas about risk management strategies. The perpetrator and victim risk factors in this chapter can be used in this way. The information gathered about these factors can be integrated into a comprehensive risk management plan, and be used to formulate plans for monitoring, supervision, and treatment of the perpetrator and safety planning for the victim. A risk assessment for intimate partner violence must include consideration of a range of perpetrator and victim factors. These factors should be combined to formulate a comprehensive risk management plan that included four domains: monitoring, supervision, treatment, and victim safety planning. These basic principles are intended to assist in achieving the true goals of the risk assessment process: the enhancement of victim safety and the prevention of violence. This chapter reviews what is known about risk factors for domestic violence, and goes beyond a consideration of offender-based risk factors and assessment. The chapter is divided into two main sections: perpetrator risk factors and victim considerations. Suggestions are made for a process whereby offender- and victim-based information can be integrated into a comprehensive risk management plan. References
