Abstract
The feature OJP news report is that Mary Lou Leary has been appointed as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the OJP, joining OJP on May 20, 2009. She previously served at OJP as Acting Assistant Attorney General at the end of the Clinton administration and beginning of the Bush administration. Since 2004, she has been Executive Director of the National Center for Victims of Crime. In other OJP news, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is planning to expand the hours that the telephone lines dedicated to calls about the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Program will be staffed. On May 26, Attorney General Eric Holder granted a 1-year extension to all jurisdictions required to comply with the provisions of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), which the Justice Department is responsible for implementing under Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act. Information is also provided on upcoming deadlines, the new look of OJP's Web site, and the Attorney General's announcement on April 24, 2009 that the Justice Department is awarding $100 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to victim assistance and compensation programs. Reports and descriptions of OJP resources that are available pertain to BJA's offering of tools for public health emergencies, the release of the 2007 Youth Gang survey results by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, victim services in rural law enforcement, and the provision of a program handbook and training guide for volunteers who serve crime victims. News is also provided on the Community Capacity and Development Office and the 10th Crime Mapping research Conference.
