Abstract
Highlights from the report include: (1) 42 States submitted 1,541,004 eligible records for discharge occurring in 2006; (2) 97 percent of these records could be linked to a TEDS admission record from 2000 through 2006; (3) of the 1,502,285 discharges in 2006, 41 percent were discharged from outpatient treatment, 23 percent were discharged from detoxification, 11 percent were discharged from intensive outpatient treatment, and 10 percent were discharged from short-term residential treatment; (4) of the 1,502,285 discharges 47 percent completed treatment, 25 percent dropped out of treatment, and 13 percent were transferred to further treatment; (5) the treatment rate was 47 percent for discharges from all service types combined (hospital residential treatment, detoxification, short-term residential, long-term residential, outpatient, intensive outpatient, medication-assisted opioid detoxification, and outpatient medication-assisted opioid therapy); (6) the median length of stay in treatment was 156 days for outpatient medication-assisted opioid therapy, 87 days for outpatient treatment, 58 days for long-term residential, and 50 days for intensive outpatient; and (7) the median length of stay for only those completing treatment were 183 day for outpatient medication-assisted opioid therapy, 121 days for outpatient treatment, 90 days for long-term residential, and 64 days for intensive outpatient treatment. Results are presented from the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) for discharges from substance abuse treatment occurring in 2006. The report provided information on treatment completion, length of stay in treatment, and demographic and substance abuse characteristics of approximately 1.5 million discharges from alcohol or drug treatment in facilities that report to individual State administrative data systems.
