The major areas of concern which emerged from the analyzed data included: high-risk behavior among prisoners, inadequate access to healthcare services for HIV-positive inmates, and lack of HIV/AIDS prevention programs. Several suggestions emerged from the study as ways to facilitate access to better healthcare to inmates having HIV/AIDS, including collaboration of the prison department with the National AIDS Control Program. In India, basic medical care is available in all prisons according to the state prison manuals. Although all of the mechanisms seemed to be in place, there was still a huge gap in the provision of basic healthcare of inmates. This study entailed a qualitative inquiry to explore the HIV/AIDS healthcare services being provided by the correctional system in India and aimed at finding a larger healthcare intervention for inmates with HIV/AIDS in Indian prisons.
