In continuing the identification of new applications of mobile technology and the building of strong partnerships, the Maryland State Police (MSP) developed a prototype of an electronic citation system, called the Electronic Traffic Information Exchange (E-TIX). In May 2007, the Governor of Maryland signed the new law permitting electronic citations. This law allowed multiple charges to be issued on one document, and eliminated the need for the violator to sign the citation. This article describes the development of E-TIX and the legal challenges the MSP faced, and how their commitment to promoting the use of mobile technology within the MSP, that started with automating traffic citations, evolved to incorporate solutions that facilitate interagency coordination for all types of incidents. 1 note
