This article discusses the success of the new investigative tool for law enforcement, the mobile fingerprint reader in Los Angeles County, CA.
Abstract
Mobile fingerprint scanners have been deployed widely to various law enforcement agencies throughout Los Angeles County. This investigative tool can do more than just capture a fingerprint; the devices work with mobile digital computers, and some devices are agnostic. Los Angeles County chose a solution that was light, very portable, and very fast, with a total number of 2,000 devices deployed. A limitation of the mobile fingerprint scanner for the County is that it currently only searches the AFIS managed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. This tool has had a significant impact in Los Angeles County, providing law enforcement with a piece of equipment that has enhanced officer safety, as well as community safety. This article discusses the deployment and impact of mobile fingerprint scanners in Los Angeles County.
